Many of the larger businesses and government
entities are on Castellana so this is a great area for an
academy to be located. Club Ivy has some of the cheaper
class prices in the city so they receive a wide variety
of students during the year. The clients range from individual
student classes to “Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores”
(CNMV), which is the agency that supervises and inspects
the Spanish Stock Markets. Most classes are at Club Ivy.
The idea is to get back-to-back classes so that you, the
teacher, are not traveling all over the city. Club Ivy does
outside classes if requested.
All types of classes are offered. A few ongoing weekly intensive
group classes are offered throughout the year for general
English or TOEFL. Normally three to six students attend
these classes. Many of the classes are one-to-one or one-to-two.
Some business students like to come together with a colleague.
Short intensives are a popular option for students. These
can range from 12 to 60 hours, usually spanning from one
to four weeks, for example, for a student who wants to cram
for a one-week intensive session to prepare to take the
GMAT.
For classes such as the GMAT, First Certificate, or TOEFL,
books must be followed to prepare the student for the test.
For the other classes, books are suggested as to the student’s
level, but it is up to the discretion of the teacher.
A nice thing is that Club Ivy gets a large influx of students
from June through September because they have a program
where they send many of their students overseas for a summer
or fall semester. These students typically like to take
a short intensive General English class. As a teacher, this
is nice because you have the option for a variety of students
teaching different classes. It can be exciting because you
do not know what is around the corner, but it can also be
frustrating if you have classes ending, but nothing on the
schedule starting to fill those empty hours.
The website has been set up nicely and is organized. A new
version is currently being created. It is only in Spanish.

Facilities and classrooms:
The facility is in a very nice building in a nice area of
Madrid. The walls are off-white with black borders and wooden
floors. It gives a nice look, but the floor creaks like
crazy. You get over that after a while. Six classrooms that
can seat up to seven students are equipped with large square
tables, nice padded chairs, and a wipe board. A very large
video room is available for showing movies and seating up
to 30 people.

Have good materials support, photocopier?
The teacher library contains the typical teaching books
such as Cutting Edge and Upstream with the appropriate
CDs and tapes. A photocopier is available to copy necessary
class materials. Two computers are available for teachers
to research the internet or check their emails when no
other teachers need them. CD / tape players are available
for listening exercises.
Have "Director of Studies" (DOS) support?
The director currently has a support staff of six full-time
administrative personnel.
VIPs on staff?
None at this time.
Qualification requirements for employment?
Both a Batchelor’s degree and an English teaching certification
such as CELTA or TEFL are preferred, but not mandatory.
Either a degree or certification is sufficient. A teacher
must be able to speak English at a proficient level. A résumé
is normally reviewed before an interview.
Experience requirements for employment?
No experience is necessary. Hire at a distance?
No. After a résumé review, the applicant will
be called in for a personal interview.
Hire Americans and do their papers?
In the past, this was not an option. For full-time teachers
or teachers that will be working for Club Ivy for more than
a year, this is a possibility. Each teacher is reviewed
on a case-by-case basis.
Preference for British or Americans? Why?
There is no preference for British, American, or any other
English accent.
Estimated teachers hired yearly:
Approximately 30 – 40 teachers are hired every year. Club
Ivy is always looking for new teachers throughout the year.
Teachers at Club Ivy with over 4 years?
None. The director of studies and three other administrators
have been on staff for over four years.
Number of students:
Approximately 300 students per year attend classes with
Club Ivy.
Best part about working at Club Ivy:
One of the best things is the people and students. Club
Ivy is flexible with their teachers. Some want full schedules,
and some just need a few extra hours. Whatever it is, they
try to accommodate. Students come to the school so teachers
do not have to travel all over the city carrying heavy books
for classes.
Other Benefits?
A percentage of salary is available if needed before pay
day. Books are part of the class so teachers have a choice
to follow a curriculum or not.
Offer teacher training or development along with
job?
No formal teacher training is given. Three staff members
are available for teacher questions or assistance with class
preparation.
Can teachers take language classes for free or
for a discount?
Spanish is offered through “Club de Español,” which
is the Spanish branch of Club Ivy. Part-time teachers are
given a fifteen percent discount.
The hourly rate for classes ranges from 9€ - 30€ depending on the number of students in the class and whether it is at the Academy or outside.
Their full-time salary starts at €1,100 and guarantees a
fixed number of hours each month.
