Diverbo – More than Pueblo Inglés

Spanish students reported that their hundreds of hours of traditional class do not prepare them for putting their language skills into practice in their daily use of the language, their trips abroad, nor at business meetings or conference calls. The frustration and anxiety that they felt while trying to express themselves had to be addressed! As a result Diverbo-Pueblo Inglés created an immersion course, where students could practice conversation English among English natives in beautiful Spanish countryside venues.

Diverbo ReceptionistOur company has been running “Pueblo Inglés” programs since July 2001 and, thanks to around 14.000 English natives that have been involved, we have made it a more than English experience for our students!  This program is unique and anyone who has been spent 8 days with us can confirm this!  But what else do we offer that makes working for us a bit different?

Since 2003, we TEACH English to students who work in the most prestigious companies in Madrid. Because we are young, we are still very energetic and strive to provide an English language experience that goes beyond the traditional learning methodologies.

Since October 2012, we have expanded to new horizons by adding other languages to our portfolio: French, German, Spanish and Chinese.
The Pueblo Ingles program is still the essence of who we are, but to include these new languages and different ways of communicating, from now we will be Diverbo. A new name conveying diversity, fun and language, the foundations on which we started with Pueblo Ingles years ago.

Diverbo Classroom

When can teachers start?
Our high peak recruiting season is in September/October and January/February, but we recruit year-round if work is available.

  • In-company classes: On-going. The cores of the classes go from September or October until the end of June or July. Nevertheless, depending on demand, courses can start anytime during the year. January is also one of the peak moments of the year.
  • We have groups of the different Masters programs starting in: February, and October.
  • Seminars: Throughout the year.
  • Residential Courses, "Villa Inglesa": Almost every week and weekend throughout the year, including the summer.
  • Kids and Teens: summer months; Weekends Camps during the school year.

Do teachers have to be an autónomo or can I work under a contract?
Most of our teachers work on contract. However, teachers could collaborate with us as "autónomos" (freelance), but the latter is more limited.

How do teachers get paid?
The teachers are paid in the first 5 days of every month, after providing the attendance sheets of their classes. However, “autónomos” teachers bill us at the end of the month for the hours they have taught with our clients.

Do teacher need to speak Spanish?
In the case of our ESL teachers, no. In fact we prefer that our teachers have a low level of Spanish or do not speak it at all. Teachers with a high level tend to translate in class, which is detrimental to the students’ listening comprehension and learning of vocabulary.


Can we collaborate with non–EU workers?
Teachers possess an EU passport or an EU work permit. Furthermore, teachers must have a valid residency card which contains an NIE number (Numero de Identidad Extranjero) and paying taxes in Spain.

Facilities and classrooms:
Ten spacious classrooms, with natural lighting plus a large conference room for bi-monthly "meetings," "presentations," and "business-writing" seminars for students.

We also have a range of the in-company classes in Madrid center and outskirts.

Have good materials support, photocopier?:

We provide a photocopier and use the best books available on the market. Teachers can use 3 computers in the staff room to connect and prepare their classes.

Have "Director of Studies" (DOS) support?
Dougal Quin is the Academic Coordinator, and he is always available to advise teachers with anything academically related. As well as co-coordinating most programs, he also works on new materials to be used in the classroom. He also sets up the students' study plans, which teachers are then expected to follow. Teachers present and practice each language point in order of difficulty (easy to difficult), using primarily an interactive audio-lingual methodology, though teachers have a little freedom to use their own materials to present each language point.

Employment Information:

Qualification requirements for employment?
Most of the teachers have university degrees, and/or a CELTA/TEFL certificate, which is highly valued.

Experience requirements for employment?
Depends on the course and classes assigned.

Hire at a distance?
We can do a first screening interview by phone/Skype, but we usually collaborate with teachers who are already living in Spain, except for the Counselors for our Summer Camps.

Hire Americans (without work permit) and do their papers?
Unfortunately no, but they are more than welcome to volunteer in our Pueblo Inglés immersion course!

Preference for British or Americans? Why?
None. The clients' requests are what matter most. If a client requests a particular accent, Diverbo does its best to comply.

We do however require native or totally bilingual teachers.

Estimated teachers hired yearly:
We currently have over 70 teachers working with us.

Number of students:
Over 2,000 in teaching, over 10,000 in our immersion courses.

Best part about working at Diverbo:

It's a good company which provides a lot of support for their teachers. They feel like they are a part of a company in which all of the parts are inter-connected and equally important.
Of course, the staff makes every effort to get their client companies to block their hours, and not unmotivate teachers by sending them on 3-hour bus rides just to do hour-long classes.

Other Benefits?
Teachers who stick around a second year get better blocks and salaries, depending on the evaluations and management of administrative tasks such as handing in papers at the end of every month. Diverbo respects seniority and people who do a good job. There are also good prospects for promotion.

Starters' average salary?

The initial rate on contract is 15’75 euros or 16’50 euros gross per hour taught, depending on the location, length and type of the classes. However, this rate increases after some time working for us and for some specific type of classes (for example, master programs)

Starter Autónomos Teachers make between 20 and 21 euros an hour depending on a number of factors such as experience of the teacher and location, length and type of the classes.

Program Specifics:

Time slots available: Upon demand: mornings, mid-days, evenings. Classes can begin at any time during the year, and the client chooses time, location and duration – we adapt to the needs of the client.
There are two formats: face to face or on-line, in which case we provide computer and material to teach.
Course location Madrid: In-company (Madrid center or outskirts) or at our headquarters in Madrid (metro: Nuevos Ministerios).

Essential Job Requirements:

  • We look for teachers with at least 2 years experience who can accredit their English teaching as a Second Language (CELTA, TEFL or other recognized qualification) and who have a university/college degree.
  • To teach adults and business professionals, you must prove you have your valid work permit and NIE (residence card). If you are an official freelance status (autonomo), you have to prove that you pay your own taxes and Social Security.

Diverbo English Teacher for Masters Program.:

We are seeking experienced teachers for our Masters in English Program.

Program Overview:

An intensive masters program has been developed with professionals in mind. With different levels (from A2.2 to B2.2) and schedules (full-time: classes 25 hrs/week and part-time: classes 10hrs/week), this five-month program delivers results. The group of teachers, each with their own specialty (Grammar, Vocabulary, Skills, Pronunciation...), offer an extensive syllabus to raise the student's language communication. Since February 2009, the English masters program has been available online to anyone in Spain (and the world really!). The Masters program is our most intensive language program. The course runs throughout the year (from October – February or February – June) and consists of weekly classes and immersion programs (Pueblo Ingles and Villa Inglesa). There are a maximum number of 6 students per class; and one of the most rewarding aspects of the course for teachers is that they are generally extremely motivated.

Program Specifics:

Calendar and time-table.There are 2 starting dates: October and February. We need to ensure continuity to the students. Therefore, if you commit to taking on a class or a group, you have to follow through the full school year.

  • Full-time Masters in English (5 months) - classes Monday To Friday from 9-14.30.
  • Executive Masters:  Weekdays (5 months) - classes Monday to Wednesday from 19-22.00.
  • Executive Masters:  Weekends (5 months) - classes on Friday from 16-21.00, Saturdays from 9-14.30.
  • Online Masters (5 months) - Weekdays - Monday to Wednesday: morning (8-10.00), afternoon (14-16.00) or evenings (19.30-21.30).

    Diverbo Counsellor Position in Summer Camps

    Do you like working with kids and/or teens? If you are responsible, imaginative, caring and full of energy, this might be just the job for you! If you would like to be a Counsellor, please read on!

    The Program:

    The summer programs for Kids are immersion courses that take place in several locations in Spain where Spanish children enjoy a full week of activities in English. During this week they take part in different games, group activities, organise a fair, enjoy time at the swimming pool or participate in scavenger hunts but don´t forget this, no Spanish is allowed!!

    During this week they are accompanied by Counselors managing each of them a group of 8 to 10 children, the program is directed by the Program Director and the Master of Ceremonies, who are present for the whole duration of it and who will be in charge of making sure that the program is following the structure it is supposed to as well as organizing activities, and providing support to the Counselors, as well as leading and taking part in all of the activities.

    Job Description:

    Your Role During . . .

  • Supervise daily recreational and social activities for groups of students. You will be in charge of groups of 8 to 12 children (aged between 7 and 12 or between 13 and 17 years old).
  • • Explain activities, play games and instruct workshops: sports, arts and crafts, theatre, music, dance, etc... The participants will rely on you to guide them through their activities and you must have both the charisma to work with a group and the sensitivity to listen to the individual.
  • Tend to campers’ requirements/needs.
  • Make sure the campers´ speak and hear as much English as possible.
  • Enforce safety rules and regulations and ensure the safety and well-being of the campers.
  • This demanding role requires constant energy and enthusiasm. You will be a role model, teacher, mediator, comedian and friend. In the residential camps, you'll be with the children 24 hours a day.
  • Overseeing appropriate behaviour at meal times.
  • Chaperoning on the bus trip from Madrid to the venue and back.
  • The team is usually made up of 1 counsellor per 10 participants.
  • Volunteers pick-ups and drop-offs in Madrid.
  • Essential Job Requirements:

  • Age: must be at least 22 years old.
  • Languages: Must be a native English speaker.
  • Work permit: EU work permit and a Spanish identity number NIE (resident card) if living in Madrid.
  • Experience: Previous camp experience, 1 to 2 years working with kids and/or Teens. Teaching experience is an advantage and required for some of the residential camps.
  • Skills / Personal Attributes: You need to be someone with enthusiasm, energy and have an open mind with an outgoing personality. You don’t have to be a trained expert, you just need to love working with kids/teens and have lots of imagination.
  • Skills or interests in activities such as arts & crafts, sport, theatre, dance and music are a must. First aid experience/certification is highly valued, but not essential.
  • Non-smokers preferred. It is expressly forbidden to smoke when in the presence of children (as stated by new Spanish Law of 2011).

  • What We Offer:

  • Contract: We offer a contract to EU workers (with work permit) for the duration of the program. You must have a Spanish Social Security number. If you have been working in Spain for more than 3 months, you are also required to have valid identity number (NIE). You will be asked to send all documents scanned when receiving the job offer.
  • Training: You must be available for a 4-hour training session before your program begins. We will go through the rules and responsibilities, the day to day logistics, activity and workshop preparation, how to deal with the children, your relationship with the on-site staff and your superiors, how to deal with difficult situations and make sure you work as a team.
  • We pay the following expenses for the duration of the program: Transport from Madrid to the venue, full room and board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in shared room with another counselor, plus accident and medical insurance. The camp will provide all the material necessary for the activities.

    Diverbo English Teacher in Villa Inglesa:

    VILLA INGLESA, the intensive residential program that takes place in our rural hotel in Segovia (Casón de la Pinilla).

    Program Objectives:

    Only one out of every ten Spaniards can honestly say they speak English if the question is asked in a job interview. The objective during our grammar programmes is for each student to learn enough to handle any situation comfortably, even a job interview.

    The starting point when a student sign up to this course is a personalized evaluation of the client’s level of English. After studying his/her needs and availability, we design a customized course that will help to:

  • Gain more agility in the grammar structure.
  • Gain fluency and confidence when speaking in English.
  • Once we know a student’s level and his or her needs, we set objectives for their 5-day or weekend Once we know a student’s level and his or her needs, we set objectives for their 5-day or weekend programme and create a study plan to ensure that they are met. Each group (made up of 2 to 4 students with a similar level) will be assigned the same number of teachers of different nationalities and backgrounds in order to expose the students to an array of accents and approaches.

    Our intensive English programmes cover a wide range of needs (if the client specifies); commercial, financial, technical or any other type of English a student may require. Otherwise, we follow a GRAMMAR and ORAL fluency-based program according the students level.

    There are two residential formats:

    Weekly – 5 days, from Sunday to Friday:
    A combination of 35 hours of classroom English with social English hours.

    Weekend - 2 days, from Friday to Sunday:
    A combination of 12 hours of classroom English with social English hours.

  • Program Specifics:

    1. DATES for VILLA INGLESA.
      There are programs throughout the year, which we fill according to demand. For every student that signs up, we need a corresponding teacher. Please, tell us your availability and we will work around it. The Academic Department will email or phone you to offer a program. Please respond in a timely manner as we will need to find another teacher if you are unable to do a programme. The peak season goes from April to October, so expect more work between those months.
    2. Program detail / Clients.
      A week before the start of a program you have been assigned, you will receive information on the student, company, the study plan and materials needed. On the Friday before the program you will need to come to the office to collect the necessary material and head off to the Segovia if you are going to take the company transport (a hired taxi service from Segovia).
    3. Teacher Evaluations.
      Are you wondering how you are doing? So are we! Your students will evaluate you after every course.
    4. Student Evaluations.
      Like the Teacher Evaluation, these are mandatory as well and should be filled out individually.
    5. Office Support.
      For help and advice on class content, lesson-planning, material etc.., your contact will be the Academic Department. They get in touch with each of you to update you on everything regarding: levels, level tests and new material that will be available, etc.

    Steps to Becoming a Teacher:

  • If you have the profile we are looking for, we will set a personal interview, (phone interview if not in Madrid).
  • If you do well in the interview, you will be invited to the training course.
  • Complete and excel through the training course.
  • Once selected, you will be assigned courses.
