Magnolia - (Magnolio) - Photos.

The Magnolia is one of those ornamental trees which can always be found in parks in Madrid mostly because of its enormous flowers and large dark leaves (brown on the underside). This is an ancient tree which originated in Asia (China and Japan) and North America (in the south). The Magnolia can grow to 25 or 30 metres.

Latin: Magnolia grandiflora.

Magnolias in the Sabatini Gardens at the Royal Palace

Magnolias between the Prado and the Royal Botanical Gardens

These are some of the most representative Magnolias of Madrid and are mentioned directly in at least one tree guide.

Flower on a Magnolia tree at El Escorial

The Magnolia flowers in late Spring and into the summer. Each flower lasts only 5 or 6 days and falls off to reveal the fruit below.

Magnolia fruit

The fruit are rather large and heavy and fall off the tree easily.

Magnolia leaves

Notice the brown undersides of these leaves. Not all of the Magnolias that I've seen have these so perhaps it's because there are hybrid varieties.
