In Libya, the British Council undertakes a wide variety of cultural activities and exchanges and manages large educational programmes in towns across the country. Conditions of employment: The 5-day working week is either Saturday to Wednesday or Sunday to Thursday. The working week comprises 38 hours a week, of which up to 24 hours per week concern teaching. The remainder of the time is for paid lesson preparation and other administrative and personal development duties. The full time network contracts are for one or two years. Evening working is the norm; however, some morning work is available. Teaching is to adults and young learners; mostly general English classes. There are some examination preparation, business English and off-site in-company English language and skills classes.
We particularly welcome applications from teachers with young learner teaching experience and from teaching couples.
Salary: we operate a 10 point scale in the range LDY19,576 plus £6,180 to LYD28,565 plus £6,180 per annum. The actual salary point you are placed on is dependent on qualifications and relevant teaching experience.
Most of the salary will be paid in Libyan dinars, but a fixed monthly sum of £515 will be paid in Sterling in the UK. The Council will not pay bank charges for bank transfers to accounts held outside of the UK.

We currently offer 40 days’ paid annual leave plus up to 14 public holidays.
Medical Insurance: You and accompanying members of your family must register online with the Council’s Group Medical Insurance as soon as possible after commencement of this contract. The scheme is administered by BUPA and covers medical and hospital treatment, repatriation costs, and other items.
On arrival: You will be met at the airport and provided with a welcome pack containing useful information, maps and contact numbers. You will receive induction at the Teaching Centre.
You are entitled to a settling-in allowance equivalent to two weeks’ salary for single employees, or three weeks’ salary for employees accompanied by family members, to help you to meet your initial expenses on first arrival in Libya. If your partner or spouse is also on a Council contract then this allowance will be calculated and payable on the higher salary only.
You may also receive up to two weeks’ hotel accommodation and up to two weeks’ subsistence where appropriate if permanent accommodation is not available on first arrival.
Accommodation: The Council will provide you with free single occupancy accommodation during the period of your contract. Couples can share. Currently all our teachers live in secure, modern two bedroom apartments in pleasant locations in Tripoli. The Council pays for reasonable utility expenses (electricity and water). All accommodation is within easy walking distance of local shops and facilities and is a 5 to 15-minute taxi/mini-bus ride from the teaching centre. Taxi fares to the teaching centre are £1-2 one-way; Mini-bus fares are 25p.
Network Pension Support: The British Council will match contributions to an appropriate scheme approved by the English and Exams Finance Team of up to GBP1,800 per annum provided the member of staff has worked for the overseas Network for over three months.
Training: We operate weekly in-service training sessions. We will partly fund DELTA candidates and provide a local tutor. We also intend to provide part-funding for the young learner extension to the CELTA course.
As part of your professional development you are entitled to an allowance of up to £75 for basic Arabic lessons in your first year.
Please note, the teaching centre is the commercial arm of the British Council in Libya and therefore is fully funded by revenue from our customers.
