This area is pretty much the financial center of Madrid. Even though a lot of the big banks and other companies have moved out to the outskirts of late, many large companies such as BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria) are still located around here (for the moment, I hear the BBVA building was sold recently).
