Real Life Experiences in Madrid - Mary.

Mary writes: Updated February 28, 2004

I have been a teacher for as long as I can remember, but full-time for about 5 years. I have a Masters in ……. from …… I taught Spanish to children while I was there. I moved to Madrid in …….. because my husband opened a …. company in ….. Occasionally I do translations … . I thought I'd try teaching adults English and see if I liked it so I got a job at an academy as soon as I arrived.

I found that although it was an adjustment at first, I loved working with adults and I felt more comfortable teaching English even though both Spanish and English are my native languages. I was doing quite well at my job but the schedule was torturous - it occupied my entire day and the pay was shameful.

Both for travel time and particularly because I spent a large amount of time on planning- not because I was on a crusade (like my previous boss commented one day) but because I felt that it was absolutely necessary. Of course with time constraints, I ended up doing lots of ten minute preps or repeating lessons that were inappropriate, but that was not the kind of teaching I wanted to do. My supervisors were satisfied with this kind of teaching but I was the one that had to face my students. I felt I had a responsibility to them and this could not possibly be effective. Many of the teachers there were very young and just passing through Spain. English was what they had to offer. It is not to say that many of those teachers didn't do a good job. Some of them managed. There were not many professional teachers though and those that were, were dissatisfied as well. It was not the kind of atmosphere I was hoping for. I left that academy and went to another one. It was even worse, so here I am today. Totally inspired and ready to go but with little idea of what to do next.

My idea of going through an academy was that I would have materials and support for my lack of experience with adults, but the conditions made it so that it was difficult to make use of these. I figured that on my own I could do a lot better, but I needed to seek some guidance. I had heard about International House Madrid and am applying to their course in May. In the meantime I am building a little library for myself and for students (of books, games, videos, magazines and other resources) and hopefully I'd like to teach at least part-time. I put some ads in the places you suggested and it's too early to tell but I am guessing I may not hear anything. The sites they have to offer here are not too user-friendly and I am worried no one will even see my ad let alone choose it among the many others.

So it's looking a little bleak, but I still hope I can build a little something that I would be happy with.
