    Certificate-level qualifications are first level qualifications, usually taken by teachers with little or no TESOL experience who wish to enter the profession. To be considered as a valid certificate in TESOL, a qualification must:

  • Validation: be externally validated and monitored by a recognised awarding body (usually a university or exams board) and be accredited by a national, professional certification standards board such as the QCA, in the case of England. Note that the regulatory body could also be the MoE in some environments, and that in the case of professional qualifications offered by universities, the awarding body and accrediting body will be the same institution.
  • Teaching practice: contain at least six hours (45-60mins) of supervised teaching practice (i.e. teaching practice where a qualified assessor observes and gives feedback to the trainee teacher. Classes taught must be to a minimum of five students at two distinct levels of language proficiency.)
  • TESOL input: contain at least 100 hours of directed TESOL input.
  • All qualifications must meet the validation, teaching practice and input criteria listed above.

    Examples of certificate-level TESOL qualifications:

  • Certificates in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages accredited by the QCA at level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework.
  • University certificates in TESOL.

  • Berlitz is seeking native English teachers to take part in a program with an important educational organization in Spain, teaching weekly immersion courses to Spanish university students in various locations throughout the country. The program runs from August to December in various locations throughout Spain.

    Teachers will:
    · work Monday to Friday teaching groups of Spanish university students in three classes (from 9:00 to 18:00, in three 2.5 hour blocks.
